Mind at the End of Its Tether 1945 was H. Wells' last book - only 34 pages long - which he wrote at the age of 78. In it, Wells considers the idea of humanity being soon replaced by some other, more advanced, species of being. He bases this thought on his long interest in the paleontological record. At the time of writing Wells had not yet heard of the atomic bomb but had predicted a form of it in his 1914 book The World Set Free. Mind At The End Of The Tether. Wells' viewpoints may be considered the solipsism of an unhealthy mind projecting an individual state onto the macrocosm. He acknowledges that the healthy person, with their innate gift for self-evasion, is a component of 'the normal multitude, which will carry on in this ever contracting NOW of our daily lives, quite unawake to what it is that makes so much of our existence distressful'. When I consider another little book Wells published just before Mind at the End of Its Tether, I find the suggestion that Wells had lost hope and given up to be preposterous. I think too often Mind at the End of Its Tether is condemned or dismissed or praised as a disjointed Orwells description wallow in pessimism by an old man disappointed or even heartbroken over the failure of his life-mission as he feels that life winding down to an end he knows to be only days or weeks away. Wells could have told of the last days of man, smitten by some strange malady of the mind Or of his extinction in some unfelt storm of radio-activity that his bungling statement blindly let loose What a tale he did tell of the world's peril from the mechanized men of the war god's own planet But that tale had a happy ending.
