In 1986 he released the solo album Before Your Time. It has since been reissued with another solo release, Consonant Please Carol, as the second half of the CD. The songs The Deserter and Stuck It Right This Time should be quite familiar to fans of Fairport Convention, as they are staples in the band's live set and appeared on their live album, Old-New-Borrowed-Blue. He was a founding member of British folk rock group Fairport Convention and is the only founding member still in the band. He has also been involved with the Albion Band and a wide range of musical projects, both as a collaborator, producer and as a solo artist.
