Finlandia and The Swan of Tuonela are so familiar, in fact, that Søndergård scores points just by offering something dramatically different from most of what's out there. His approach to Sibelius is dry, deliberate, and focused on transparency and the revelation of inner detail, and in realizing these goals, he draws fine playing from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The solitary English horn Swan of Tuonela is as entrancing here as anywhere, but perhaps the real surprise is Søndergård's distinctive Finlandia. 44, No. 1, and the less familiar King Christian II Suite, Op. 27, from a set of incidental music ending with a Ballade depicting a 1520 massacre. Thomas Søndergårds approach conjures a pulsing energy of the kind which seems to well up from within the music itself, rather than being driven from without he also has a canny awareness of how a tiny, unobtrusive shift of pace now and again can make a whole Sibelian musical structure seem to come alive. The orchestral response has an expressive vividness and focus that is exceptional: En Sagas sense of narrative momentum, the dark culminating surge of The Oceanides, and Finlandias stirring rhetoric all come across memorably. The only aberration here relates to otherwise excellent recorded. Valse triste Sad Waltz, Op. 1, is a short orchestral work by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It was originally part of the incidental music he composed for his brother-in-law Arvid Järnefelt's 1903 play Kuolema Death, but is far better known as a separate concert piece. Sibelius wrote six pieces for the 2 December 1903 production of Kuolema. The first was titled Tempo di valse lente - Poco risoluto. In 1904 he revised the piece, which was performed in Helsinki on 25 April of that year. Album 2018 10 Songs. Søndergård is particularly good with atmosphere, giving The Oceanides, En saga, and The Swan of Tuonela really strong individual characters, while drawing some fine playing from the woodwinds of his Welsh orchestra. Finlandia has all the gravity and patriotic pomp youd expect, while the delicate, moving Valse triste unfolds gently. The King Kristian II incidental music has great variety, ranging from charming dance numbers Musette to high drama and terrific energy Ballade. High-quality sound too. Conductor Thomas Søndergård talks Sibelius as his second Symphonies album with BBC. This eagerly awaited recording is the second in Thomas Søndergårds Sibelius series with the BBC National Orchestra of & Sibelius - Symphony No. 5 - BBC National Orchestra Of WalesThomas Søndergård. BBC Radio. 5 out of 5 stars 43. The wonderfully descriptive Swan of Tuonela finds Sibelius at his mystical best as he casts the cor anglais as the majestic swan from Finnish mythology. Sibelius: Finlandia is a fitting finale to this Sibelius series which also includes critically acclaimed recordings of four of his symphonies. Sibelius - King Christian II Suite, Op. Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2018 It's the Ballade that comes off best: it trips along with a thrilling edge and the Linn sound makes the bass drum shake the floorboards.
