Although the school first opened its doors in 1869, the traditional songs of the University of Minnesota did not appear until after the turn of hte century.

In early years it was customary for each senior class to compose its own song. Many were written but none became the “School Song.” The need for a school song was perennial editorial subject matter in the University publications. Numerous contests were promoted and prizes contributed for the best songs submitted, but none found continuing favor with the students or alumni.

It was the Class songs, however, that finally produced the University's Alma Mater, “Hail! Minnesota.” In 1904, Truman E. Rickard composed the music for a song to be used in the seinor class play. It consisted of two verses.

It seemed desirable that there should be some additional words for the song because the second verse… was not adapted to permanent use as a college song. Consequently, Arthur Upson, a 1905 graduate, even then recognized as a poet of unusual merit, was requested to write additional words. Mr. Upson compiled with two additional verses.

“Hail! Minnesota” was made the official state song, by resolution of the 1945 legislature, the only change being that the second line reads “Hail to thee, our state so dear!” instead of “college dear.”

The “Minnesota Rouser” resulted from a song contest sponsored by the Minneapolis Tribune in 1909 for the purpose of acquiring a Minesota “pep” song or “rouser”. The song sleected was “Minnesota, Hats Off toThee” and its composer, Floyd M. Hutsell, was awarded the prize of one hundred dollars. It has been the “pep song” of the University ever since, although a number of fine fight songs have since been written.

Two recent additions to Minnesota songs are “The Golden Gopher Line” by Hugo Munson and “Minnesota Victory March” by Dr. Carl G. Swendseen.

New Minnesota songs are always welcome and should be submitted to the Minnesota Alumni Association, 205 Coffman Memorial Union, University of Minnesota.
