Notas

Before there was Broken Social Scene, there was K.C. Accidental. The lo-fi bedroom recordings of Broken Social Scene’s founder/vocalist/guitarist Kevin Drew and multi-instrumentalist/studio mastermind Charles Spearin, K.C. Accidental – a mostly post-rock instrumental project –laid the foundation for the Toronto collective’s sprawling expanse in the form of two albums released by Noise Factory Records at the end of the 90s: Captured Anthems For An Empty Bathtub and Anthems For The Could’ve Bin Pills.

Because they were traded amongst friends and hidden in the pockets of Toronto’s independent record stores, these two albums have been out of print for five years and have never been available outside of Canada. This fall, Arts & Crafts will be reissuing these seminal recordings in one package on October 26th in 2-LP, 2-CD and digital formats.

For Could've Bin Pill, the two upgraded their studio setup and hunkered down in a friend's living room. Rather than play all the instruments themselves save for the trumpet work of BSS's Jimmy Shaw, they added further layers from future BSS members Justin Peroff, Emily Haines, and Jason Collett. Haines actually provides vocals in a duet with Drew on Them Pop Song 3333, his very first recording as a vocalist. The additions make for a more muscular unit, one whose expanse you can hear stretch and congeal nicely across every cut. As a whole, that approach provides. Album 1997 12 Songs. Do Make Say AnthemsCaptured Anthems collects the projects earliest recordings, six instrumentals pieced together over a five-day stint. Relatively little of the fulsome, fully orchestrated songcraft you expect from Broken Social Scene is in evidence, and a spirit of try-anything invention and post-rock eclecticism presides. It is the six tracks of Anthems for the Couldve Bin Pills that are probably of more interest to the Broken Social Scene fans, however. Accidental may be familiar to most people as the title of the opening track proper to Broken Social Scenes breakthrough LP You Forgot It in People yet the name comes with its own baggage and history, serving as the moniker behind which Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin operated in the late nineties. Fast forward two years to the arrival of K. s second-and-final record Anthems for the Couldve Bin Pills, which polishes up the production, expands the bands musical palate and its lineup, incorporating dreamily floating chord sequences, and flourishes of horns and strings indeed, both the washed-out pianos of Ruined in 84 and Residential Love Song a longing.
